On the Sunday of the GCR’s Wartime Weekend, we started things off by looking around the stalls at the British, American and French Military Station at Quorn & Woodhouse – before taking a train south to cross the ‘English Channel’ (actually Swithland Reservoir) to ‘Le Birstall’, where we headed to the base at Greenacres. After a break, we took a train ride north to the British Home Front Station at Loughborough and a walk into the town for lunch and a bookshop visit.
Next, it was time for travelling south again – this time to the German-occupied station at Rothley, to join the crowd of visitors for the skirmish battle between the German and American troops. Witnessing the American victory, we returned to our own transport near Quorn.
To summarise, there were plenty of visitors, many costumed soldiers and civilians, along with steam and diesel trains, and perfect weather – making this a good day out.
